Library-Parks
Five large library-park facilities specially designed to provide a place
of dignity for thousands of people have enriched the city’s architecture
and made knowledge, culture, and recreation accessible to all its residents.
These spaces are emblematic of Medellín’s urban and social transformation,
integrating people from every corner of the metropolis into the life of the city.
Antioquia Museum and Botero Square
The center-city Antioquia Museum boasts a distinguished collection of works by the
famous Antioquian artist Fernando Botero. Plaza Botero, the square fronting the museum,
showcases 23 monumental sculptures donated by the artist for the enjoyment of
the whole city and its visitors.
Explora Science Park
More than 300 interactive experiences await the visitor to this park, Medellín’s
premier initiative to disseminate and promote science and technology to its residents
and thereby build knowledge, champion creativity, and make the discovery
and learning process fun.
Nutibara Hill and Pueblito Paisa
Perched atop one of Medellín’s seven sentinal hills, Pueblito Paisa is a reproduction
of a typical Antioquian village, with its cobblestone public square, fountain,
and church. After a walk through local history, visitors can explore craft shops and
sample traditional local cuisine at restaurants that offer spectacular views
of the city day or night.
Carabobo Pedestrian Walkway
Stroll along one of the most typical walkways of early and mid-twentieth century Medellín.
This eight-block stretch of Carabobo Street has played a vital part in the city’s history
and in its renewal. Heritage buildings and artistic and architectural landmarks stand out
amid the bustle of commerce.
Pies Descalzos (Barefoot) Park
With over 12,000 square meters of interactive spaces, this park is a fun learning environment
with guides to explain phenomena such as astronomy and their impact on public utility services.
It also is the site of Casa de la Música, a space designed for musicians of every genre
to perform and for music lovers to enjoy.
Norte Park
In this spectacular 160,000-square-meter amusement park just north of downtown Medellín,
children and grownups alike enjoy rides and attractions like the park’s
adventure and fantasy sections.
Plaza de la Luz
Medellin’s historic Plaza de Cisneros, site of a market in the last century, has been rebaptized Plaza de La
Luz (Square of Lights). This modern public space is illuminated by 300 soaring light columns, 2,100
reflectors, and 170 high-powered in-ground lights.
Vásquez and Carré Buildings
The Vásquez Building and neighboring Carré Building, architecturally reminiscent of
coffee drying sheds on Antioquia haciendas, are two jewels of Medellín history and architecture.
With the restored former Antioquia train station across the way they offer a picture of late
nineteenth-century Medellín.
Botanical Garden and Orchid Exhibit
The Orquideorama orchid display draws visitors from across the city. The beauty and
originality of its architecture earned it the National Prize for Architecture. It is set
in Medellín’s incomparable Botanical Garden, a 14 hectare leafy oasis of tropical forest,
palm forest, azaleas, and a magnificent collection of orchids, Colombia’s national flower,
which offers the visitor an inviting fresh-air space for relaxation and recreation.
